Services - Cloud Computing
The federal government is planning an aggressive move toward lower-cost cloud
computing technologies, providing new revenue opportunities for recent entrants to the
federal market, including Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. Cloud computing, a model
where users access a set of shared computer resources via a network connection, offers
the potential to more quickly deploy new computing resources when needs change, while
reducing federal expenditure on information technology (IT) installation, maintenance and
support.
The push for cloud computing is driven by a government-wide initiative to
consolidate the number of data centers which have grown 14 percent annually over the
past 12 years. Launched in February 2010, the Federal Data Center Consolidation
Initiative calls for reducing the number of data centers by 39 percent by 2015.
